Chapter 6 of 9

RTP and volatility

Two numbers describe how a slot pays over time: RTP tells you how much of all the money bet comes back on average, volatility tells you how unevenly. Here are both for every Sugar Rush game, straight from the rules screens.

Every RTP in the series

All of them sit between 96.44% and 96.58%. The differences between modes are tiny, which tells you something useful: no button in this series is a better deal than normal play. They change how the money arrives, not how much of it comes back on average.

What 96.5% means, and what it doesn't

RTP (return to player) is a long-run average over all players and an enormous number of spins. A 96.5% RTP means that, across many millions of spins, the game returns about $96.50 of every $100 bet, and keeps $3.50.

It does not mean that a session returns 96.5% of what you put in. In our Test Kitchen the same 500 base spins returned anything from 49.5% (Xmas) to 131% (Super Scatter, thanks to three bonuses), and bought bonuses ranged from 0.95x to 2,968x their bet. Over a session, volatility matters far more than RTP. RTP matters over a lifetime of play: on $10,000 of total bets, a 96.5% version costs you $350 on average, a 94.5% version $550.

Why Pragmatic's site says 96.00% for Sugar Rush 1000

The demo's rules screen for Sugar Rush 1000 says 96.53%. The game's page on pragmaticplay.com lists 96.00%. They are very likely both correct: like most large studios, Pragmatic Play supplies several RTP versions of its games, and each casino chooses which one to run. The demo we played uses the 96.53% build; some casinos run lower ones.

The same can apply to any game in the series. Third-party reviews mention lower versions of the original Sugar Rush (95.50% and 94.50%), which we could not check ourselves. What matters is the version in your casino's lobby, and that you can check.

How to check the RTP in your casino

  1. Open the game in the casino (real or demo mode).
  2. Press the i (information) button at the bottom left of the game.
  3. Page through the rules to the "Game rules" page with the volatility badge. It lists "The theoretical RTP of this game is …" and one line per buy or special bet.
  4. Compare with the table above. If the number is lower, you are playing a lower-RTP version, which is legal and common, but worth knowing.

High volatility, in practice

All four games carry the same badge: high volatility. The game's own explanation: high volatility games pay out less often on average, but the chance to hit big wins in a short time span is higher.

In Sugar Rush that shows up in three ways we could measure:

  • Two spins in three pay nothing. Our hit rate was 29.8% to 37.6% across the four games.
  • Most wins are smaller than the bet. A five-bear cluster pays 0.2x to 0.3x. The paytable only becomes generous at 10+ symbols.
  • The money is in a few rounds. The median bought bonus returned 12.8x to 56.9x, the mean 30.1x to 131.1x. The gap between those two numbers is volatility.

The practical lesson: budget for long dry runs. Our session planner estimates what an hour of play costs at your bet and pace, and how wide the swings can be.

In short

  • RTP across the series: 96.44% to 96.58%, depending on game and mode.
  • Casinos may run lower versions; check the rules screen in your lobby.
  • High volatility means most spins pay little and a few pay a lot. Plan for the dry runs.

Questions about RTP and volatility

Which Sugar Rush game has the highest RTP?

Sugar Rush Super Scatter, at 96.58% for normal play, according to the rules screens. Sugar Rush 1000 has 96.53%, the original and Xmas 96.50%. The differences are small.

Is Sugar Rush high volatility?

Yes, all four games are marked high volatility on their rules screens. In our test only 30% to 38% of base spins paid anything, and most of the money came from a few bonus rounds.

Why do I see a different RTP in my casino?

Pragmatic Play offers casinos more than one RTP version of its games. The demo we used runs 96.50% to 96.58%; a casino may run a lower version. The information screen inside the game shows which one you are playing.

Does the bonus buy change the RTP?

Very slightly: 96.50% to 96.55% with a buy, depending on the game. No mode in the series is meaningfully better or worse than normal play.
